From an early age, I’ve always been captivated by invention and the intellectual property landscape. This passion matured over time from school projects that sparked innovative ideas to eventually writing and securing my own patent.
Recently, I had the opportunity to intern at Mewburn Ellis, a leading European IP law firm. The week-long experience exceeded all expectations and marked a significant turning point in my understanding of what it truly means to work in the industry.
Inside the World of Patent Law
While I came in with a general grasp of patent law, largely centred around drafting claims, I quickly realised that the role of a patent attorney is far more multifaceted than I had imagined. The internship unveiled the intricate layers of IP practice, from handling amendments and oppositions to building meaningful client relationships. It was eye-opening to see how these components interact within the legal and commercial framework that governs innovation.
One of the most enriching aspects was the hands-on practice. I was able to draft a patent application, propose an amendment, and even examine the legal and logical vulnerabilities of an existing patent in the context of opposition. These exercises gave me a deeper appreciation of the skill, precision, and strategic thinking required in the profession.
This immersive experience offered not just a practical lens, but also a broader blueprint of how the IP industry operates. I left Mewburn Ellis with renewed enthusiasm and a sharper focus on the career path I wish to pursue. It validated my passion and clarified the impact I hope to have within this dynamic and vital field.
